Discovering the Floral Biology of Aristolochia

cover for "Discovering the Floral Biology of Aristolochia" by Dr. Richard Rintz

Aristolochia or pipevines are unusual flowers found in the New World with a curved tube coming up from a spherical chamber, the shape similar to a Meerschaum pipe. Two are found in Missouri. Most are found in the southwest to southern Texas.

Insects are lured in and trapped for a day or two, then released. Most of the work deciphering how these flowers work was done in Germany from 1793 to 1994 and never translated into English leaving botanists unable to read German unknowingly duplicating their work.

This book contains English translations of nineteen important papers illuminating how German botanists discovered how the Aristolochia flowers work. There are numerous illustrations.
