Hazel’s life starts disintegrating when her father is sent to Iraq. He promises to come home. He doesn’t. At his funeral she meets grandparents she didn’t know existed. She becomes the target of the school bully even as she lets her schoolwork go as she has no incentive now to do it. Her mother is in financial difficulty and needs to find a job as the country’s economy collapses. Her lifeline is babysitting Bobby, but that doesn’t quench the angry fire raging inside her behind the wall of ice she hides behind. Until the wall begins to melt.
